Why Anthropic's RSI Warning Should Terrify Your Product Roadmap (Not Excite It)

By Nitin Anand · November 03, 2026

Three years ago, I watched a fintech we'd built get commoditized in eight months. Not by a competitor—by a vendor who'd bundled our entire value chain into their SDK. We'd spent 18 months engineering what they released as a feature flag.

Anthropic's warning that self-building AI is "very close" brought that memory back, sharper than I'd like.

The lesson I extracted then still applies: capability acceleration doesn't care about your sprint cycles. When a fundamental technology layer becomes self-replicating, your two-year product roadmap isn't conservative—it's fiction. The fintech play we built assumed 24 months of architectural advantage. We got eight because the infrastructure we thought we were building on top of started building for us.

Here's how that maps to what's happening now:

If AI models can improve themselves, the gap between "prototype" and "production-grade" compresses from quarters to weeks. Your differentiation can't live in model performance anymore—every competitor gets the same intelligence upgrade simultaneously. The defensible layer moves down the stack: to proprietary data flywheels, to domain-specific safety rails, to regulatory compliance infrastructure that can't be cloned by a smarter algorithm.

For telecom and fintech players building AI products today, the application layer is what gets commoditized first. The integration layer—how you govern data, audit decisions, handle edge cases in regulated environments—that's where margin survives when intelligence itself becomes abundant.

If your competitive moat is "we trained a better model," you're already behind. What's the one capability in your stack that wouldn't vanish if foundational models doubled in performance tomorrow?
