OpenAI and ServiceNow expand partnership across enterprise workflows

By Sushmit Verma · October 29, 2026

OpenAI and ServiceNow deepened their partnership yesterday, embedding AI across enterprise workflows. I've watched dozens of these announcements since early 2024, but this one forced me to revisit an assumption I'd held for two years.

The story: I led a digital transformation program in 2025 where we piloted workflow automation across three government agencies. We treated AI as a feature—something you bolt onto existing processes to make them 15% faster. We hit our KPIs, declared victory, and moved on.

The lesson: We were optimizing the wrong layer. The ServiceNow integration reveals what happens when you stop treating AI as a productivity add-on and start treating it as the orchestration plane itself. When OpenAI's reasoning sits inside your ITSM, HR, and customer service workflows—not adjacent to them—you're no longer automating tasks. You're redefining what a workflow is. The system can now interpret context, suggest next actions, and route decisions based on unstructured input. That's not RPA with better NLP. That's a different category of capability.

The application: If you're planning 2027 architecture decisions right now, audit where AI lives in your stack. Is it augmenting human work (chatbots, summarization, copilots), or is it embedded in the transaction layer where state changes happen? The former delivers incremental gains. The latter changes your operating model. For regulated industries, this distinction determines whether you're deploying a tool or redesigning control frameworks. Oracle's integration two days ago with ChatGPT points the same direction—apps moving into the AI surface, not AI being added to apps.

What workflows in your enterprise would change if reasoning sat inside the transaction, not beside it?
