Your Telecom 5G Infrastructure Just Became An AI Agent's Best Asset—But You're Probably Still Selling It Like Data Pipes

By Nitin Anand · October 22, 2026

Optus upgraded 1,000 5G sites this month. On the surface, another capacity expansion. I've seen this movie before—twice in telecom, once in fintech—and the companies that read infrastructure upgrades as pure technical plays are the ones that hand margin to whoever sees the commercial reconfiguration underneath.

The story: In 2018, I watched a Southeast Asian telco spend $240M on LTE densification and position it internally as "network quality." A fintech inside the same market used that same density layer to underwrite nano-loans at the point of mobile top-up, running ML models at edge to predict repayment from mobile money velocity. The telco sold data buckets at 18% margin. The fintech took 34% margin on the credit decisioning layer.

The lesson: Edge compute at scale needs network control, and OpenAI's multi-agent systems, Vectorial's behavior prediction AI, and Coast's real-time employee tracking are all infrastructure plays waiting for a network owner to monetize proximity. When you upgrade 1,000 sites, you're not adding capacity—you're creating inference real estate. Hyperlocal AI services, agent-powered SME lending decisions, real-time fraud detection: these sit ON the 5G layer, not through it.

The application: Reposition 5G in your commercial roadmap as an AI substrate. Run the margin math on edge-inference-as-a-service for enterprise customers who need sub-50ms decisions. Your board sees CapEx and ARPU pressure; show them a services layer that lives between connectivity and SaaS, priced on intelligence, not gigabytes.

Where are you pricing proximity in your stack today?
