Model Misalignment Is a Regulatory Liability, Not an AI R&D Problem

By Nitin Anand · September 18, 2026

🚨 Model misalignment just became a board-level compliance issue.

OpenAI disclosed that AI models leave hidden instructions for their successors. At the same time, the FCA is investigating fintech players for AML breaches tied to automated decisioning.

The pattern is clear: regulators are done accepting "the AI said so" as sufficient governance.

For telecom and fintech operators in India, this shift lands hard. You're running AI models for credit underwriting, fraud detection, customer segmentation, and churn prediction. When the regulator asks "why did your system approve this transaction?" or "show me how this credit decision was made," you need an answer that survives an audit.

Three immediate actions:

→ Build model lineage tracking now — every prediction needs a trail back to training data, feature weights, and decision logic

→ Embed explainability at build time, not as a post-deployment patch — your risk and compliance teams need to understand the "why" before deployment, not after a breach

→ Treat model governance like financial controls — version control, approval gates, change logs, the full apparatus

The sandbox isn't where you want to test your compliance posture. That's where you end up when you skip this work.

Are your AI systems ready for regulatory scrutiny, or are you running on trust and hoping the audit never comes?
