Anthropic previews MHS standard for AI agents that operate machines
It was 11am Thursday when Anthropic published their preview of the MHS standard. Most of my morning calls stopped mid-sentence to pull up the spec.
Because this wasn't another AI safety paper. This was the first framework that actually maps how an autonomous agent should behave when it can turn a valve, restart a machine, or trigger a physical system.
Here's what nobody's saying out loud yet:
1. The governance gap just closed — We've had ISO/IEC 42001 for AI management systems, NIST AI RMF for risk. But nothing that tells you what happens when an agent can touch operational technology. MHS fills that.
2. Your risk register just doubled — If you're piloting agentic AI anywhere near infrastructure, you now need safety boundaries documented before someone asks why you didn't have them.
3. Human oversight isn't optional anymore — The standard embeds oversight controls. That means every AI agent deployment needs a clear answer to "who stops this, and how fast?"
4. This will shape procurement — Within six months, enterprise RFPs will start asking if your AI vendor supports MHS-compatible controls. The standard becomes the floor.
5. China's 200 standards from yesterday? Same pattern — Pre-development ethics reviews, mandatory compliance baselines. The window for "move fast and figure it out later" is closing globally.
