Ciena says AI services to drive telecoms revenue growth
I watched a telco CEO walk out of a pitch three years ago because we suggested AI could become a revenue line, not just a cost center.
Today, Ciena published data from 1,200 service providers across 12 markets. Ninety percent expect high-capacity AI network services to drive revenue growth over the next three to five years. Fifty-six percent call them their primary source of net-new revenue.
The shift is real. But here's what the survey also says: 88% believe optical networks need urgent upgrades to support premium enterprise AI service level agreements. Nearly half call those upgrades critical.
Translation: the opportunity exists, but the infrastructure gap is wide.
India sits at the confident end of the spectrum. Sixty-seven percent of Indian service providers strongly agree AI-driven network services will be a primary revenue driver—among the highest confidence levels in the study.
That confidence matters. In emerging markets, where enterprise digital transformation is accelerating faster than in mature economies, telcos that can guarantee AI workload SLAs will capture enterprise wallet share that used to go to hyperscalers.
The window is narrow. Network upgrades take 18 to 24 months. Enterprise AI deployment cycles are moving faster than that.
The telcos that close the infrastructure gap first will own the enterprise AI connectivity layer. The rest will watch that revenue flow to someone else's pipe.
